After the lizardfolk...

The kingdom's rulers return in triumph from the lizardfolk settlement to announce that it has been destroyed, bringing the kidnapped young shifter with them. The young girl, named Eliana, is safe and sound except for mild hypothermia and a very bad scare, both of which she quickly recovers from. Her aunt Naafreen, the hunter who had brought the news of her kidnapping, is naturally overjoyed at her return.

While profusely thanking the rulers, Naafreen says that she will spread the word about their heroism and about how they cater to the needs of the people in their community. She mentions that many of the people who live scattered around the Stolen Lands are people who came to the Eldeen Reaches to avoid being controlled by repressive governments, but word is spreading about how this new kingdom is different and she promises to do what she can in that regard.

Once Naafreen and Eliana leave, there is still the usual work of rulership to be done. The treasure gained from the lizardfolk is sent north as is usually the case, for Oleg's contacts to sell it in Aundair and purchase the items the rulers want, since their fledgling state doesn't yet have a strong enough economy to easily produce more powerful magic than scrolls and potions. With winter beginning to turn into early spring, increased numbers of people flow back and forth between the capital and Olegton. Grigori's absence seems to be having a positive influence too. It's a good start to the year ... thus far.

OOC: The rescue of the girl leads to an upsurge in the kingdom's Loyalty (+2), leaving it with the current scores:

Quote :
Current scores: Economy +27, Loyalty +24, Stability +20 (19), Unrest 0, Kingdom size = 7; Command DC 27; Consumption = 2; Treasury = 14 BP

Main city statistics: Base Value = 700 gp; Defense Modifier +8; Districts = 1; contains Castle, Noble Villa, Exotic Craftsman, Inn and House (x3); 1 minor item

Olegton statistics: Base Value = 700 gp; Defense Modifier +0; Districts = 1; contains Stable, Shrine; 1 minor item

Someone roll me a d20 for a Stability check.

Hah! I'm presuming you chose to roll one d20 on the die roller and then it did. This die roller only rolls after your actually post, so if it's your first time using it you don't actually know that it's rolling. Anyway, good thing you rolled before Avi's natural 1, since then I use your roll instead of his one.

Post to come shortly.

The kingdom of Khatovar continues to grow. While those colonists who wish to settle in more urban surroundings are either traveling to the capital or stopping at the new settlement of Olegton, others are setting up homes further afield. At the urging of Oleg and Svetlana, who are now spending most of their time handling the influx at and around their former trading post, many settlers take advantage of the fertile plains around Bokken's hut and begin to settle in that area. Thatched houses and farms begin to spring up, which should eventually contribute heavily to keeping the little realm self-sufficient.

House Orien continues to deliver on the deal reached months ago with the rulers, building a network of well-made roads connecting all of the segments of Khatovar. While not all the roads are as broad and stable as the highway that now stretches between the capital and Olegton, they all display solid workmanship and should last for years with limited maintenance, barring any serious natural disasters. Traders and settlers flow back and forth over the network of roadways, under the watchful eyes of the militia commanded by Kesten Garess.

OC: The above translates to the following mechanical changes with the kingdom.

Quote :
The kingdom Stability roll is made with the 14 Julia rolled, so the kingdom gains 1 BP (since Unrest is 0)

2 BP is spent on kingdom Consumption

The kingdom claims the hex with Bokken's Hut, which puts the kingdom at 8 hexes (-1 BP; Consumption +1; Kingdom size and Command DC +1)

The kingdom gets a free road in hex 8 due to House Orien (total hexes with roads = 8; 2 free roads left; Economy & Stability +1)

Hex 8 is transformed into farmland (-2 BP; Consumption -2)

The edicts remain the same: Promotion = None (-1 Stability); Taxation = None (+1 Loyalty); Festivals per Year = 0 (-1 Loyalty)

Post re. building choices to follow.

Building choices:

After all the spending on other matters, you have 10 BP to spend on building construction. You can build one building, plus a House if you want. The construction can be at either of the two settlements (the capital and Olegton) or, if you do a building and a House, at both (if you want, since you could also do the House and the building at one settlement).

Here is what each settlement currently has:

Capital: Castle, Noble Villa, Exotic Craftsman, Inn and House (x3)

Olegton: Stable, Shrine

And here are your options:

* Spend 3 BP on a House, which lowers Unrest by 1. Though your Unrest is already at 0, a House does also provide a prerequisite for many other buildings. If building a House, it's better at Olegton since a House is a prerequisite for many buildings (and you currently have one House at the capital which isn't fulfilling a prerequisite for anything).

* Spend 6 BP on a Brewery or a Dump or a Granary (boosts Loyalty and Stability), a Library (boosts Economy and Loyalty), a Mill or a Smith or a Tannery (boosts Economy and Stability)

* Spend 4 BP on a Graveyard or a Park (boosts Loyalty)

* Spend 10 BP on an Inn, Tavern or Stable (boosts Economy and Loyalty) or Tradesman (boosts Economy and Stability), all of which also raise the settlement value by 500 gp (i.e. raises the ceiling on readily available equipment and magic items there). If you spend on one of these, it has to be at the capital since they all need a free House and only the capital has one.

Another option, of course, is to not actually construct anything this month and save up for the next, which'll then give you a lot more options for more costly buildings (which, of course, provide bigger/better bonuses too).

Thoughts?

I say we should either build tradesmen at the castle, or save the BP for something bigger and better.

Shil, what book are the Kingdom rules in? I'd like to take a look at them.

They're actually in one of the modules, and I'd rather nobody took a look at them. They contain some things you guys shouldn't know, plus I'd rather the kingdom-building be something you learn just as your PCs are doing, through trial and error and practice. As you might have noticed, I've been gradually giving you more and more info about the nuts and bolts of the system as time has gone on. After tomorrow's session, since we'll have a fair gap till the next one, I'll send out a document with all the details that you know thus far.

Rowan wrote:

There are three basic components to it:

1 - During the Upkeep phase, you make a Stability check vs. the kingdom's Command DC. If you succeed and the Unrest is currently nil, you gain 1 BP.

2 - During the Income phase, you can gain BP by selling items (minimum cost 4,000 gp) which you gain while adventuring or which are created by item-creating buildings in your cities. Each month, you can sell 1 item for every district in your kingdom. To sell each item you need to make an Economy check (based on whether it's minor, medium or major) and you gain BP based on the type.

Currently, you have 2 districts (one in the capital and one in Olegton) and two buildings producing minor items (Exotic Craftsman in the capital, Shrine in Olegton). Each minor item takes a DC 20 Economy check to sell and nets you 2 BP. You don't know about medium and major yet since they haven't come up.

3 - During the Income phase, you make an Economy check vs. the kingdom's Command DC. If you succeed, you gain BP = your check result divided by 5 (rounded down)

If you check the Kingdom Development thread, you'll see these are the three ways in which you've been gaining BP.

I think build one house at Olegton and then save the rest for something bigger. Though the library or dump would be good too.

Going with the house at Olegton and saving the rest for later does sound like the best compromise, so I'll say that's what you do.

Now one last thing - someone roll me an Economy check and a Loyalty check.

PostSubject: Re: Current month - Kingdom issues   Current month - Kingdom issues - Page 2 Icon_minitimeTue Dec 14, 2010 9:34 am

After some discussion with their councilors, the rulers decide to currently focus on building homes for the new colonists moving to and near Olegton, while beginning to lay the foundations for larger structures once this is taken care of.

The influx of new settlers not only raises the population (Olegton having swiftly moved to having over seven hundred people living within it, while the capital boasts nearly three thousand inhabitants now) but also contributes to the slowly increasing economy of Khatovar. Many of the colonists are skilled craftsmen and the forests of the Stolen Lands produces valuable lumber, which combine to create a small but stable revenue stream from Aundair.

As always, not everything is positive for, and within, the little kingdom. Just over a fortnight after the rescue of young Eliana from the lizardfolk, word comes in of people in the northwest again having encountered troll-sign. The news this time is grimmer. A group of eight loggers traveling far afield never returned. The pair of scouts sent to investigate found their wagons overturned, their oxen slain and partly eater, and a couple of ripped-off limbs and heads as the only remains of the loggers. Also present was a crude wooden sign (atop which the heads were found) on which someone had scrawled in blood, "Hargulka, king of the trolls, warns the intruders to his land - leave or die!!!"

Unsurprisingly, there's significant concern among the populace at this news, but the rulers' recent activities (and the absence of Grigori) keeps morale high enough that there is no major fear or flight from the area - yet.

OOC: The above translates to the following mechanical changes.

Quote :
Build a House in Olegton (-3 BP)

Sold 2 minor items and gained 4 BP

Generate Income: Made Economy check (35 vs. DC 28), so gain 7 BP

Event: Trolls are attacking travelers to the northwest. Made Loyalty check (29 vs. DC 28), so the kingdom’s people are loyal enough to not be concerned.

Yup. If not for the +2 to Loyalty from the rescue of the young shifter, you'd have failed by one and lost 1d6 BP.
